A Note About Vintage Footwear

One of the things that makes vintage footwear so special is also one of its unique characteristics.

Before every item is listed, we carefully inspect and clean it, paying particular attention to the condition and flexibility of the sole. However, there is one aspect of vintage footwear that simply cannot be predicted with complete certainty.

In rare cases, the sole may begin to separate from the shoe after the first few wears. This is not necessarily a sign of damage or poor condition. It is a natural consequence of age and long periods without use.

Most shoes are assembled using adhesives that remain flexible through regular wear. As the shoe bends and moves, the adhesive continues to perform as intended. When footwear remains unused for many years, however, the adhesive can gradually dry out and lose its flexibility. Once the shoe is worn again, the movement may cause the sole to separate.

Although this can understandably be frustrating, the good news is that it is usually a very simple and inexpensive repair.

In most cases, applying a quality shoe adhesive is enough to permanently solve the issue. If you prefer, any local cobbler can also carry out the repair quickly and at a very reasonable cost. Once fresh adhesive has been applied, we recommend leaving the shoes unused for around 48 hours so the bond can fully cure.

Fortunately, this is an uncommon occurrence, but we believe it is important to be transparent about the nature of genuine vintage footwear. We hope this explanation helps you better understand why it can happen and reassures you that, should it occur, it is easily resolved.
